The Fate of a Man is on par with Sholokhov's other masterpiece The Quiet Don. A very powerful account of a man whose life is ravaged by war but manages to regain hope in the form of an orphan he adopts. The early stories are interesting but they lack the staying power of his more mature works. Only worth reading if you're a fan of Sholokhov.
